Pale-gray vacant eyes…asymmetrical freckles on her bobbed nose…Only in the tritest of terms (diary resumed) can I describe Lo’s features: I might say her hair is auburn, and her lips as red as licked red candy, the lower one prettily plump, bobbed nose…Lolita of the strident voice and rich brown hair—of the bangs and the swirls and the sides and the curls at the back upturned russet face.

Couple of inches taller. Pink-rimmed glasses. New, heaped-up hairdo. She was frankly and hugely pregnant. Her head looked smaller and her pale-freckled cheeks were hollowed…with round pommettes…And softly, confidentially, arching her thin eyebrows…This Lolita, pale and polluted, and big with another’s child, but still gray-eyed, still sooty-lashed, still auburn and almond.

“Perhaps the matter of genre doesn’t really matter.

Some years ago I attended a reading in Washington, D.C., by the Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. She introduced the story she read by saying that it was not autobiographical. Then she read her story about a woman who weighed somewhere in the vicinity of 300 pounds. When she was done, and the Q&A started, the first question was: ‘Miss Atwood, how did you lose all that weight?’

Perhaps the matter of genre doesn’t really matter.

Which is kind of my position. I mean, honored as I am to be at this table with such amazing writers, whose work I adore, I also have to confess I don’t have much of a dog in the fight. I believe writers should feel free to write whatever they want to and label it whatever they want to. In a perfect world, that one sentence would comprise my entire presentation.

Nowadays- not only in Turkey, but wherever I travel, mostly in Europe- young writers want to turn their lives into books, into novels, because they believe their lives are that important. Mostly I tell those kids who want to be writers that you have to have your own ideas. Of course, I myself am in my novels and books, but I strongly believe that you must distinguish between your life and your ideas.”

litany is a queer readings series dreamed up by esther & leah, dear friends who study together in the creative writing mfa program at ubc. so who are these two?

Esther McPhee (left) is a writer and jam-maker who has spent time studying poetry, creative non-fiction, and writing for children in both Vermont and Montreal, and is now so happy to be calling the cedars of BC home again. They run The Sunday Shortstack, a pop-up pancake and folk music cafe, and have thrown readings, underground shows, and other rad community endeavours. A Thousand Kinds of Thirst, their handmade collection of poetry, was stitched together in the summer of 2012. Esther has worked as a tutor, teaching assistant, editor and writing mentor for writers of all ages and backgrounds. They’re especially excited about creative D.I.Y. projects, outsider art, and other work that blooms in unexpected places.

Leah Horlick (right) is a writer from Saskatoon, SK. A 2012 Lambda Literary Fellow in Poetry, Leah’s writing has appeared in So To Speak, Grain, Canadian Dimension, and Poetry Is Dead. Her first collection of poetry, Riot Lung, was released by Thistledown Press in October 2012. She has performed in venues from Montreal to New York and landed a spot among the top 15 independent slam poets in Canada last year. Leah has worked as a belly dancer, bookbinder, a museum interpreter, and - just once - a fortune teller. She is now the poetry editor at PRISM international.
